“Leadership is to be that calm force in the center.” I was sitting in a meeting where idesigner Lawrence Levy ushered these words and they’ve been very impactful to us. As we’re choosing to feel RELAXED this week, this quote is once again resonating with us. With the Holiday Season in full swing, whenever we hear the word “RELAX” it’s easy to default to thinking it’s about slowing down or away from the hustle and bustle of the season, because so often we put so much pressure on ourselves to having to make everything perfect. It’s a pressure that is hard to escape because everywhere we go we seem to find reminders for us to make everything perfect. “Find the perfect gift”, “Wear the perfect dress”, “Plan the perfect getaway”, “Create the perfect atmosphere”, we hear and see just about everywhere we go. So as we are seemingly told that we are on a hunt to achieve perfection, being RELAXED is something that is harder and harder to do. Yet it’s not always unattainable.
For us, the notion of being RELAXED makes us look around and want to point to leadership. As a sole proprietor myself, I could look around and wonder who’s leadership am I supposed to look towards to be the calm force in the center of my business. For me, the answer is my own, and that’s why I choose to feel RELAXED. In life, things are not always perfect, but when we can draw from the calm forces in the center of our situations, it allows us to have a more RELAXED response to them. Being around others and allowing their good influences, good attitudes and good guidance to permeate into our own lives will go a long way into our own approach in leading within the different spheres of our lives. So this week, our approach to being RELAXED includes learning from those we admire—a response that requires us to step outside our usual motions and be intentional in looking and drawing from good influences, good attitudes and good guidance in order to add to, and be, the calm in our own center.
